#3 The “Rational Brain” (neomammalian)

Known as the neocortex, this is the part of your brain that is responsible for conscious thought and self-awareness, language, reasoning and planning.

Cognitive Distortions

First let's talk about cognitive distortions

These are thinking traps that are essentially tricks that our minds play on us. Distorting our perception of reality, and convincing us of things that simply aren’t true.

 

We engage in this practice on a daily basis and are a huge reason behind why we have these negative thoughts and creeping anxieties we feel like we can’t control.

 

However the difference between those who occasionally stumble into a cognitive distortion and those who struggle with them on a long term basis, is the ability to identify and modify these faulty patterns of thinking.

BLACK AND WHITE THINKING:

For example one of the most common examples of a cognitive distortion is Black and white thinking. This is a very common cognitive distortion when we tend to see things as ALL or NOTHING. 

 

Sometimes in the face of potential failure the mind gets so overwhelmed that you don't have enough energy to make a choice to set things right, so you believe you’re only left with two options - to do, or not to do.

For example

“I missed my workout today, so there’s no point in continuing because it’s ruined.”

“He never says hello to me, I guess he hates me.”

 

Whenever you start mentioning words like “always, never, impossible, ruined” these are indicators that your thoughts are becoming extreme or ‘black and white’.

 

This is a harmful, unhelpful way of thinking because it means you never truly see circumstances in an unbiased and neutral way. So you need to get into the habit of challenging yourself to identify this when it happens and take into account other viewpoints of the situation.
